THE ANCIENT NEAR EASTERN GODDESS -

Who was She?  Where is She now?

 

This course will cover Mesopotamian, Hebrew, Canaanite, Phoenician and North African images,

icons and inscriptions/invocations related to female deities from Ishtar, Lilith, Isis and Anat,

to Tanit, Asherah/Astarte and Atargatis.

 

 

LILITH’S FIRE

Examining original sources of power: Re-defining sacred texts as transformative theological practice

 

This class will give students the opportunity to become familiar with Adam’s first wife, Lilith,

and to write their own brachot/blessings and midrash/interpretation, as we examine sacred texts.

 

 

JEWS AROUND THE WORLD – WHO IS A JEW?

 

An in-depth look at the beliefs and rituals of Lemba Jews of South Africa and European-American Jews. 

We will study the text “For She Is A Tree of Life: Shared Roots  Connecting Women to Deity” and share our own

family traditions and cultural assumptions, beliefs and ritual  practices.  Discussion of family lineage and ancestry

will be an important part of the class.
